Sci-Fi Vehicles
Future Bike
This was originally called lava bike and the main thing I was trying to recreate was the bikes body.
In the original Carrera version I created it using a combination of displacement modifiers, these however didn't have direct parallels in blender. I was able find a suitible modifier to recreate the body in blender. The rest of the object is pretty straight forward and is pretty much just a bunch of hardbody objects sitting on top of each other.
Space Pod
Fly me to the moon
This is a re-work of an earlier spaceship (space fighter) that I originally created in Carrara as part of a set of spaceships, one of which is on the re-model in blender to-do list.
In this re-work I decided to have it not be a fighter this time so in the comparison pictures in the galleries the missing parts were guns on the original model.
The craft has not only rear facing engines but also has engines on the sides and at the very front on the little pod thing. They are positioned and angled in a way to provide a wide rage of rotational movements, similar to the movement style of B5’s Starfury , momentum is only meant to come from the rear engines though, so to cancel the direction you’re traveling in you would need to use the directional thrusters to point the craft in the opposite direction and then use the main engines.
The central pod is also meant to be detachable and act as an escape pod if the engine section goes wrong, in the latest version of this ship I have also added a fuel tank at the back of the craft.
For the newly rendered image I was going to have it against a star-scape but as I was playing around with background designs I was taken with this starburst/explosion pattern, as it gave me a kind of Flash Gordon (Buster Crabbe) era which I though was kind of cool.
Grav Ship
Concept space ship, instead of the normal engines you’d have, instead a spherical array of ‘grav plates’ are arranged around a structure. The grav plates can either create a positive or negative gravitational effect in front of them (either pulling or pushing the ship in a set direction).
Bunker Snail
More spirals, the idea is that the mech snail can withdraw into its shell when in danger
The image in the background is a HDRI that I was just going to use for lighting, but when I added it, it suited the scene so well I decided to keep it visible.
Bi-Sect
Chitin chitin bang bang
In a change to my usual approach of making mechanical insects, I thought I'd create an insect machine instead so Bi-sect combines a dragonfly and a bi-plain, the middle legs are used to rotate the propellers while the front and back legs act as landing struts.
For the body material I tried to create something that resembled chitin with a surface displacement made using a voronoi / noise texture mix.
Vertex paint was then used to highlight raised areas of the body, this info was then fed into an attribute node to control the mix of two variations of the chitin material. An emission version of the chitin was also created for the illuminated areas of the body.
Earlier versions were set against a blank background, but this felt a bit empty so when I came back to it so I thought i'd set it in a field this time.
Mechadilllo
Don’t tend to use booleans, but used them here along with re-topologising the result to create a set of parts that could fit snuggly together, looked a little bit like an armadillo in the end hence the name.
